Ossetti

Ossetti or Ossi di Morto are traditionally baked in Italy on November 2nd, the Feast Day of the Dead (or All Souls’ Day), that we celebrate instead of Halloween to remind our ancestors. It's a delicious kind of cookies

Dozens of very different recipes can be found under the name of "ossi di morto." Some regions use wheat flour, others corn; some regions flavor the cookies with orange zest, others use cinnamon. In Sicily they are shaped to look like skulls, in other places they are shaped to look like the "bones" of the dead. And the list goes on.

In general, these cookies are a hard meringue biscotti studded with nuts. They crackle like crunching bones and are nice dipped in espresso or wine. My personal tip is to dip them in hot milk and honey and eat them for breakfast.

Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 cups sugar
5 egg whites
4/5 cups almond powder
1 spoon baking powder
1/2 cup vin Santo

Mix everything except the almonds until the dough softens. Place the dough in a syringe with a large spout. Cover the oven plate with baking paper and arrange the dough in 2" strips. Add the almonds on top of the cookies and bake at 340 degrees for 35 minutes.
